Did you know that you can save up to 300 liters of water every day?
Water is an increasingly scarce resource, and the drought due to lack of rainfall, with the expectation of a very hot summer, is causing a state of alert that jeopardizes sectors such as agriculture or energy. Therefore, it is important that each of us does our part to conserve this vital resource and take measures to save as much water as we can.
In this article, we share some practical and basic tips for achieving efficient consumption in your daily life, with the potential to save up to 300 liters of water!
Don't take a bath, take a shower
Showering and turning off the water while soaping up can save up to 70% of water compared to taking a bath. Additionally, having aerators and water flow reducers on all faucets can save up to 50%.
The toilet is not a trash can
Using the toilet as a trash can (cotton pads, intimate hygiene products, wipes, food, etc.) is harmful. A normal toilet flushes between 9 and 12 liters of water each use. Throw it in the bin, not in the toilet! Choose tanks with a dual flush system that allows you to use only half of its capacity and avoid unnecessary waste. Save the full tank for when a greater flushing capacity is needed and get ready to save a lot with a very simple action. The savings amount to about 3 liters of water per flush.
Washing machine always full
Use the washing machine with a full load and the ECO program. Remember that washing machines use roughly the same amount of water for half loads as they do for full loads. If you think that shorter programs are more efficient, you are very mistaken. These programs require more water to do the job faster and, therefore, also consume more energy. Always look for efficient appliances (A+++), with ECO programs and programmable options. In addition to saving water, you'll save energy.
Save water with the dishwasher
The dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand. There's no need to rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. It's enough to just remove the food scraps with utensils or a used paper napkin. You'll save about 30 liters of water each day, plus the energy needed to heat that water. Moreover, it's more hygienic than doing it by hand. With the high temperature reached inside the dishwasher, bacteria that may be present in food remnants are eliminated.
Don't leave the faucet running
Small actions, big savings. Turning off the tap while we wash our hands or brush our teeth is a simple and easy gesture. Not wasting it is a good practice that greatly contributes to water conservation in households.
Check the water installations
A dripping faucet can waste up to 1,000 liters of water per month. Repairing and maintaining water fixtures and devices helps us to avoid waste and save.
Take care of an efficient garden
If you enjoy gardening, install an automatic drip irrigation system or high-efficiency sprinklers according to the land's needs. A good alternative could be the installation of artificial turf.
In summer, water after 8 PM when temperatures are milder and evaporation is lower. Moreover, your plants will suffer less. Also consider that native plants, accustomed to our climate, consume up to 10 times less water.
Pools filled all year round!
If you're lucky enough to have a pool, install a filtration system and keep it in good condition to avoid having to empty it. It's water wasted! Cover it and carry out regular preventive maintenance. By doing this, the water in the pool can remain for more than 5 years. Planting grass around it is a mistake: the debris affects the water quality and it also consumes a lot of irrigation water.
Reuse water, give it a new life
Recycle water whenever it is safe to do so. For instance, you can use the water from rinsing vegetables or pasta, even the water that is poured while waiting for the shower to warm up, to water plants. You can also collect rainwater for garden irrigation.
Think big! You can also propose sustainable actions in your homeowners' community
Saving water is everyone's responsibility. Adopting small gestures in our daily routines can make a big difference. Furthermore, it is important to maintain and regularly check installations, use efficient appliances, and employ smart irrigation systems. If we all contribute, we can achieve a more responsible and sustainable use of water in our communities and preserve this valuable resource for future generations.
For today's and tomorrow's quality of life, at Núñez i Navarro we see it clearly. We promote the rational use of water through efficient and innovative resources and solutions in each of our projects. We ensure to avoid impacting the biodiversity of the areas where we work.
Our project in Can Gambús, Sabadell, is an example of this. This residential complex will collect rainwater for irrigating landscaped areas in both common and private zones and will implement a system to collect water from washbasins and showers to reuse it in toilet cisterns, through a specific circuit and tanks.
Currently, in all our promotions, we plant native Mediterranean vegetation watered by an efficient programmable drip irrigation system; we create a landscaped environment in the communal areas with minimal water consumption using high-end artificial turf; we install pools with an easy-to-maintain automatic purification system; we opt for taps and toilets that incorporate automation to reduce water usage in bathrooms and kitchens as needed; partial shut-off valves to facilitate repairs and limit leaks by area, and we perform technical checks of all installations to prevent leaks or overconsumption. Moreover, to cover and repair any issues with the systems, we have our Customer Service.
